Are the Days Of Miracles Past?

Jesus Heals All - Bible Verse Matthew 9:35

An elderly man walked into a church, expecting to experience the power of God like his father used to tell him when he was much younger. His father was privileged to be at meetings of men like Kenneth Hagin, John G Lake, Kathryn Kuhlman and the other men of God who revealed the power of God to us in this century. The man, now stricken in age and battling with cancer, had come to God, whom he had turned his back on several years ago to follow the way of the world, just to see if he could receive the healing power of God he had heard so much about. There is no better place to encounter God but in the church, he thought. He tried several churches, large and small congregations, black and white preachers, but none of those churches could meet his need of a touch from God, a miracle. All he experienced was good music, good teaching, shouting, but no power of God to touch him and heal his body. After his last attempt, as he walked out of the church, once again disappointed, He remembered all the stories his father used to share with him, just to ignite a desire and reverence of God in his heart, he remembered all the numerous Bible stories he heard, about the healing power and compassion of Jesus and the apostles of old. As he walked out of that church on this faithful Sunday, only one thought was on his mind, and I am sure it is the same thought that has been on the mind of many people today, “ARE THE DAYS OF MIRACLES PAST?”

The Current State Of Things

In a world of political correctness, at a time when we are more concerned about people’s emotions than what is right or wrong before God, the church of today, is more focused on theology, politics, the self-life, prosperity and megachurch cathedrals than rightly representing Jesus by being a true witness both in character and in Power. Many people are made aware of what they can get with Christ than who He really is and how to live a life that pleases Him and shows His power.

“Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof, from such turn away” (2 Timothy 3:5).

There is so much preaching going around, but there’s little power to prove or back up all our talk. The Church has become more of a social gathering and a motivational talk conference than Zion, the City of our God. And this is one of the reasons the world turns away from God because we are not rightly representing Him to them. And when some of us are confronted with the reason why we are not able to produce the same level of result, we claim the days of miracles are past. NO! That is not true.

Joel 2:28-30 says, God will pour out His Spirit on all flesh and He will show wonders on the earth. It started with on the day of Pentecost with the Apostles, (Acts 2), but it does not end there. We are also in the same dispensation, the time when God reveals His power to the world through His Spirit in Us. Jesus also said “greater things”, than He did while on earth is what we will do, so why is it that we are doing less when it comes to miracles. No sickness ever escaped Jesus, why do men come with spiritual, mental and physical sicknesses to the church, and we are not able to show them the miracle-working power of God? We have heard testimonies of great men of God, who through their faith in God, were used to perform great healing miracles such as growing of amputated legs. Why are we not having such experiences today? Is it because God is no longer willing to do miracles? No! It is because we, His children are not rising up to the occasion to tell men to have faith. Men come to our meetings and we would rather refer them to psychologists and psychiatrist than pray for them. Is this what Jesus meant when He said: “will the Son of man meet faith in the world?”

The Deception

We have to say no to the tactics of the devil to deceive us and render us powerless. Ideas like these, of miracles being a thing of the past and not possible in this present time, is one of the deceptions of the devil to the church which Paul revealed in 1 Timothy 4:1. Christ also said, “Take heed that no man deceive you.” (Matthew 24:4), thus Christ shows that deception will play a very big role in these last days.

To dial down the hunger for real miracles, many contemporary believers, use the term “miracle” to mean something very different and far less, well, miraculous. Instead of referring to a divine intervention that overturns natural necessity, they explain that a miracle is an event within the world that appears to have personally beneficial consequences. As something taking place within the natural world, the event will always be explicable in scientific terms, but the believer is also free to interpret the event otherwise — as having been mysteriously authored or brought about by the hidden hand of God.

What is a Miracle?

So, what really is a miracle? There are 2 main words that were used to in the original Greek translation and translated to English as miracles; “dunamis” meaning Power, and “semeion” meaning Signs. Therefore, I define miracles as supernatural acts that are an expression of God’s power and sovereignty carried out by the agency of man. Now let me break it down a bit.

Jesus’s miracles were called “signs”, Paul and the Apostle’s miracles were called “power”. Miracles:

  1. Have their power and source in God
  2. Have a human agent to bring forth its expression on the earth, even though God is Omnipotent, He still works through human vessels to reveal His power
  3. Not for the glory of man but for the glory and purpose of advancing the kingdom of God on the earth.

Miracles are not imagined, rationalized or just some mere random incident that we attribute to God because we believe He exists, they are intentional expressions of His Power through us. That is why faith is a key ingredient in having miracles, God does not do miracles without a man engaging in faith. Faith is the currency by which we can experience miracles (Hebrews 11). Miracles always engage 3 things:

  • the power of God to exert His superiority over the norm
  • the faith to engage that possibility in God here on earth
  • the man through which that power find expression and the testimony comes to

So every miracle includes the Power of God and a Sign to testify the presence of the Kingdom of God here on earth (Luke 10:9).

The Instruction of Jesus

There are 4 basic miracles that are expected of everyone that is a Christian, we are to exhibit them as we act as witnesses of Jesus, preaching the gospel, we get this from the instruction of Jesus in Matthew 10:8:

  • Heal the sick
  • Cleanse the lepers
  • Raise the dead
  • Cast out devils

Some of us have confused the working of miracles gift of the Spirit, as the only way by which we can do miracles. But Jesus said as long as we BELIEVE in Him, in His name these are the signs that are expected to follow us, in order to prove the efficacy and reality of His person (Mark 16:17). In any matter that has to do with our Christian life, especially controversial matter, the words of Jesus have the final say. Who would you rather believe, Jesus or your pastor? Even if we believe we need the gift of the Spirit, Jesus has given us the full access and assurance to ask for anything pertaining to the Holy Spirit and God will give us (Luke 11:13), so we have no excuse.

So Are The Days Of Miracles Past?

This is a snippet from a Prophetic Word given to Kenneth Hagin’s by God in 1963: “Before the worst shall come and the day of darkness encompasses, there will be those who shall go and who shall carry the fullness of My truth and the fire, not only to the states of this nation but to many other places. For there is a work that must be done, first spiritually, before the Lord shall come. “Now prepare ye your hearts, for the time is at hand and the beginning is now; and ye shall see and ye shall know for the hand of the Lord is upon you and many of you shall be used in these last days and the work shall progress.”

With all we have been saying, you will know that the days of miracles are not past. In fact, according to some of the prophecies of the late Kenneth Hagin, the days of miracles are just about to begin. These are the end times, and we are entering into a season where God is going to show His power in much more according to Joel 2:28-30, so as to destroy all the works of darkness, bring much harvest of souls into the kingdom, and to establish the Lordship of Jesus over all things (Psalm 110:1-3).

If The Days Of Miracles Are Still Here, Then What Is The Problem

“For the eye of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect towards Him:” 2 Chronicles 16:9

The question now is this, “Why are there not more miracles in our day, like there were in the Bible?

  • The Heart Problem

There are many reasons why a lot of believers, including pastors and bishops, are unable to reveal the power of God to the world today through miracles. In the scripture above we can see clearly that God is more than willing to show Himself strong and mighty, but are our hearts aligned to Him enough for us to be a vessel that shows His power? Are we not too consumed by our own desires for fame and prosperity, distracted by television and social media, or drowning in our own self-pity or pride? Many believers today draw near to God with lips, but our hearts, which is the primary seed we can sow to be a carrier of this miracle power, is very far from God (Isaiah 29:13). We need to start with a heart circumcision first if we want to experience the miracle-working power of God once again.

From the testimony of A.A Allen, a great healing evangelist, in his book “The Price of God’s Miracle Working Power”, Jesus revealed to him that the incomplete obedience in our heart, due to several sins and distractions is what is stopping us from enjoying His power. To be a vessel that carries and enjoys the miracle working power of God, we have to be sanctified in our hearts and minds, so that we can be prepared unto every good work (2 Timothy 2:21)

  • A Lack of Faith

This is another reason why we do not really expect miracles. We are so used to a life without miracles that when they happen, we dismiss them by rationalizing or chalking them up to coincidence or to some unknown reason that scientists will surely be able to explain some day. The bottom line is that we are not living in an age of faith. And faith is to miracles as the cause is to effect.

Many say, “If I saw miracles I would believe.” But the Biblical answer is, unless you believe, you will not see miracles. It takes faith to please God, and the JUST will live by FAITH. Jesus said if we have faith as small as a mustard seed, all we have to do is speak to the mountain and it will be cast into the sea. Without faith, there is no miracle. Even Jesus could not do much in His home town, not because He wasn’t powerful enough, all that came to Him were healed, but because they had been so familiar with Him, that they did not believe Him.

So if we want to experience the miracles of God like in the days of old, we need to fire up our faith.

God is still alive, well and working just as powerfully as ever among those who trust in Him! He does not change, and Jesus is the same forever and ever (Malachi 3:6; Hebrews 13:8).

Jesus promised, “He who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. And these signs will follow those who believe … they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover” (John 14:12; Mark 16:17-18).

God is still in the business of repairing bodies that need it, as well as transforming hearts, minds, and spirits.

Whether you need healing, or you want to work in miracles, you can encounter the Power of Jesus right now, to be healed or to heal, wherever you are, just realign your heart and invite the Holy Spirit, and He will reveal Jesus to you. It takes believing in faith to receive and perform a miracle, so walk in faith and you will see diverse miracles.

  1. So true. God hasn’t changed. We have changed our attitude to miracles which could be a normal thing in our lives if we live in God’s presence, the presence of His glory and believe without any hesitation.

    • Amen. Seasons are changing, but Jesus is the same. He never changes! He did miracles before, He is doing miracles now, and He will do miracles in the future! Lord, we want to be your vessels through whom you would do miracles, giving hope to the hopeless, life to the lifeless, love to unloved ones. Glory to You! Thank You Jesus.
